On Sunday, March 15, 2026, the historic River Oaks Theatrebecame the epicenter of Houston’s film community as the Black Cinema Club HTXhosted a sold-out Oscar Watch Party. The evening was more than a gathering towatch Hollywood’s biggest night. It was a powerful display of Houston’s growingcreative ecosystem and a preview of what’s to come for independent film in thecity.

As a WorldFest Houston Board Member, I, LaMonde Howard, attended alongside my son, Laurence Howard, WorldFest’s Jury Coordinator.Sharing that moment together inside such an iconic theater added a personallayer to an already memorable evening. The atmosphere was electric. A fullhouse of filmmakers, students, and film enthusiasts from across Houston filledthe space, representing a beautifully diverse audience united by a shared loveof storytelling.

The leadership of Black Cinema Club HTX crafted anexperience that blended entertainment with intention. During commercial breaks, the audience stayed fully engaged through interactive film trivia, a spirited“Best Dressed” contest, and informative segments about the organization’smission. These moments transformed passive viewing into active participation, turning the audience into a community.

A major highlight of the evening was the announcement oftheir inaugural film festival, scheduled to take place just one week beforeWorldFest Houston’s festival week. This strategic timing creates a uniqueopportunity for Houston to become a multi-week destination for independentfilm, amplifying visibility for both local and international filmmakers.

The upcoming Black Cinema Club HTX Film Festival willfeature industry-relevant panels designed to equip filmmakers with practicaltools for success, including sessions on pitching projects and securingfunding. In addition, the organization will award several $2,000 grants toindependent filmmakers, reinforcing their commitment not just to showcasingfilms, but to actively supporting the creators behind them.

During the event, I had the opportunity to connect withLeroy, one of the organization’s leaders, who expressed strong interest inbuilding a future partnership with WorldFest Houston. With establishedagreements already in place with venues like the River Oaks Theatre and theMuseum of Fine Arts, Houston, Black Cinema Club HTX is positioning itself as akey player in Houston’s film landscape.

The alignment between our organizations is undeniable. BothWorldFest Houston and Black Cinema Club HTX are driven by a shared mission: tochampion independent filmmakers, celebrate diverse voices, and expandopportunities for film production and exhibition in Houston.

The 2026 Oscar Watch Party was not just a celebration offilm. It was a signal. A signal that Houston’s film community is collaborative,forward-thinking, and ready to grow together. And if this night is anyindication, the future of film in Houston is not just promising. It’s alreadyrolling.
